How to move on from my ex?

How can I mentally let go of my ex after a long relationship, move past our breakup, and overcome my resentment?
I’m feeling utterly hopeless again today, so I want to share my story and seek advice on how to move on from my ex-boyfriend.

My ex and I were together for nearly five years, with a few brief interruptions. Our breakup happened three months ago. Like any relationship, we had highs and lows, but I genuinely believed we’d overcome our issues and conflicts until the very end.

Sadly, I was mistaken, and he ended things abruptly. Though we had our differences, the breakup blindsided me. Soon after, my world fell apart.

Three months later, I still feel numb, almost in a state of shock. At times, I can’t eat, sleep, or stop thinking about him. To me, our relationship felt nearly perfect, despite minor disagreements. I constantly replay our time together and the happy memories. Right now, I feel like I messed everything up.

It stung when he casually told me, “It’s not working,” and said he’d move out and collect his things. I was furious, heartbroken, and desperate all at once. Even now, I feel abandoned and, honestly, I’m struggling to wish him well. But I don’t want to keep crying myself to sleep or stay trapped in these thoughts. I want to focus on other parts of my life, but I don’t know how. I just can’t seem to move forward.

Can anyone offer practical advice on how to process this breakup and look forward with hope? Does anyone have tips for letting go of him and our relationship? I desperately want to forget him and move on.

I know exactly the kind of pain you’re going through. It’s like a deep wound in your heart — it doesn’t hurt your body, but it absolutely tears you up inside. Give your heart a little more time. Wounds like this really do need time to heal.

For me, what helped most was just talking to people I trust — friends, family, anyone who’d listen. It didn’t even have to be about the breakup. Sometimes just chatting about random everyday stuff while feeling that someone was really there for me gave me strength.

Try to find something positive in the pain. Look back at the good memories with your ex and let yourself feel grateful for them — even if it hurts right now. Accept that he chose to leave. The relationship is over. Let him go. Really let him go.
Then turn your eyes toward the future. Distract yourself. Do things you enjoy. Treat yourself. Spoil yourself a little.

Maybe the relationship felt perfect to you, but clearly it didn’t feel that way to him — and that’s a painful truth to swallow.
The anger and bitterness that keep bubbling up from the disappointment? The best antidote is to slowly, consciously turn them into gratitude. It’s honestly one of the most powerful things you can do to keep from becoming bitter and stuck.

Give it a few more months.
But if after that amount of time you still feel like you’re drowning in it and nothing is getting lighter — please consider talking to a therapist or counselor. Sometimes we need professional help to find our way out of the darkest parts. You deserve to feel okay again.

When a deep, long-term relationship ends, it’s wise to take some time to heal and find closure. After all, someone you shared nearly everything with is no longer part of your life. The key is to focus on moving forward and letting go of the past. Start by working through any resentment and finding inner peace. If pain or disappointment makes it hard to reflect on the relationship objectively, distract yourself first. Spend time with friends, hit the gym, or enjoy a thrilling movie with your best friend. It’s also important to remove reminders of your ex—gifts, photos, or anything that triggers memories should be set aside for now. As cliché as it may sound, time truly heals all wounds, even if that feels unimaginable at the moment. Gradually, your ex will fade from your thoughts, and one day you’ll notice you’ve gone days without thinking of them at all.
